Entry to Prep

In Queensland, it is compulsory for children to complete Prep prior to progressing to Year 1. Your child is eligible to enrol in Prep if they turn five years of age by 30 June in the year of intended enrolment. In certain circumstances, early or delayed entry to Prep may be considered where it is deemed to be in the best educational interest of the child.

St Kevin’s is a vibrant and inclusive Catholic co‑educational community, proudly offering enrolments from Prep through to Year 6. With approximately 400 students, our school is small enough for every child to feel known and valued, yet large enough to offer rich learning opportunities. Each year level is supported by two dedicated class groups, helping us provide strong pastoral care and personalised learning.

Please refer to the table below as a guide to when your child will be eligible for Prep in all Queensland schools.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Choosing a school is one of the most important decisions you'll make for your child. While every school offers learning opportunities, Catholic schools provide an education that nurtures the whole child academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually.

At our school, your child will be known, valued and supported as an individual. We strive to create a welcoming community where students feel a sense of belonging, develop strong relationships and are encouraged to become their very best version of themselves.

Catholic education is grounded in values such as compassion, respect, service, inclusion and justice. These values are woven through everyday school life, helping students grow into confident young people who care for others and make a positive contribution to their community.

Prep students engage with the Foundation Year of the Australian Curriculum through a play-based program that encourages curiosity. In our safe and nurturing environment, children learn through exploration and discovery, supported every step of the way by caring teachers. With access to a purpose-built Prep precinct, students build confidence, form friendships and develop the skills they need for a positive and successful transition to Year 1.

To help your child feel confident and excited about starting school, we offer a range of orientation events prior to their first day. These opportunities allow your child and family to become familiar with our school community, meet key staff and begin building connections before their first day. Enrolled families will receive further information about these events closer to the time.

Families wishing to join us in Prep are encouraged to apply up to two years in advance, with applications ideally submitted approximately 14 months prior to commencement of Prep.

Enrolment offers are made at the end of Term 1, the year before they commence. Where applications exceed available places, families will be placed on the waitlist.

While St Kevin's School is a Catholic school, we are open to all families seeking a faith-based education in a welcoming and inclusive community. We celebrate the diversity of the families we serve and invite everyone to participate in and support the Catholic traditions, beliefs and values that guide our schools and enrich the educational experience of every student. Children who are baptised Catholic are given priority of enrolment at Brisbane Catholic Education schools.

Yes, on-site Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) for children up to 12 years old is available. This service is managed by Catholic Early EdCare. Click here to find out more.

If your child is placed on a waitlist, you will be kept informed throughout the enrolment process. If an availability arises, families will be contacted and offered a place where possible.

We welcome students and families who share in the values and ethos of a Catholic education. Each application we receive is assessed on its merit however where limited availability exists, priority may be given to:

  • Students from Catholic families who are baptised or have a demonstrated commitment to the faith within their Parish community
  • A sibling of a current or past student of the school
  • A current student of another BCE Catholic school, other Catholic schools or Kindergartens managed by Catholic Early EdCare

Families are encouraged to review the BCE Enrolment Policy before submitting an application.

We are committed to supporting every student to thrive. Our specialist support staff work closely with families to understand each child's individual needs and, where required, develop personalised learning plans and programs that support their learning, wellbeing and success throughout their educational journey.
