Saint Mary of the Cross Mackillop

Saint Mary of the Cross Mackillop is a clear example of a Catholic educator in action. She embraced life’s challenges daily through the hard work and determination she showed to provide education for Australian children. We thank her for her dedication and faith that led to the development of the Sisters of St Joseph and ultimately the contribution they have made as teachers in many Catholic schools across Australia, including our very own St Kevin’s. This contribution was acknowledged on Monday at many ceremonies across Australia for the 150th Anniversary of the Sisters of St Joseph. Sr Kathleen and two of our students represented St Kevin’s at an Archdiocesan Mass held at St Stephen’s Cathedral in the city.

At St Kevin’s, we celebrated Mass together as a community to acknowledge the work of Mary Mackillop and to say thank you for the contribution of the Sisters of St Joseph. We also ran a writing/drawing competition with the theme “Never see a need without doing something about it”. The winning students truly highlighted the ways they can be the change they wish to see in the world. Part of our commemoration of the day was also to present our Mary Mackillop Award. This award goes to the student who consistently demonstrates concern and action in the areas of justice, compassion and the care of others.
