First Lego League

Several students from Years 4 to 6 have commenced their participation in the First Lego League Robotics Competition. This worldwide technology challenge commenced on Wednesday 31 August. We will have our regional challenge at Grace Lutheran College on 13 November.

The First Lego League Robotics Challenge has several components. The first is the presentation of a practical and achievable solution to a problem faced in the world. This year, this problem is based around animals. The students will also be judged on their ability to work together collaboratively in a teamwork challenge. This task will be unknown until the competition day. The children will also be judged on their robot’s design, performance in completing several tasks and the sophistication of their programming. All of these tasks will develop the students’ skills in finding, developing, refining and presenting solutions to real world problems.

This is the first year St Kevin’s has participated in this competition, and we are indeed very fortunate that we have teachers on our staff capable of leading students through these types of projects. We are one of a very few Catholic schools which afford this opportunity to their students. As our robotics and coding programs gather momentum, it is envisaged that the resources gained from our participation in these programs expands to create opportunities for all students to extend their skills in these areas.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our P & F for funding the purchase of our robots and to Mrs Spiteri for her generous support of such projects, which will keep St Kevin’s students excelling in the area of technology use.
